Procedures For Wrinkle Treatment NYC Patients Should Consider

By Joanna Walsh

When people get older, the skin begins to produce less collagen, which leads to the formation of lines and wrinkles. While most everyone will experience this natural process eventually, there are certain habits which can increase its severity and cause it to occur much earlier, such as poor skincare, too much sun, and smoking. However there are numerous approaches to wrinkle treatment NYC, NY patients have available to them to overcome this problem.

In order to determine which procedure or procedures will be most suitable for one's particular skin type, it is necessary to consult a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist. The doctor will assess the location, depth, and quantity of unwanted facial lines, and also take the patient's age into consideration. A single or combined treatment plan will then be devised.

The least invasive form of wrinkle treatment are the injectables. Commonly used to treat crow's feet around the eyes, forehead furrows, and frown lines between the eyebrows, Botox is one type of injectable. This approach is used for creases in the skin caused by overactive facial muscles which become paralyzed and smooth when injected with a purified neurotoxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. After about 3 to 6 months, it will be necessary to repeat the procedure.

The injectable fillers such as hyaluronic acid are a separate class of substances which are used to treat areas of the face that have lost volume and appear sunken. They are not suitable for creases caused by overactivity of facial muscles and are most often used around the nose and mouth. Results from filler injections typically offer somewhat longer-lasting results than Botox.

Another alternative belonging to the injectable family of procedures is the use of natural substances produced by the body, namely collagen and fat. Natural collagen protein is injected around the lips or nose to create a plumper, fuller look, or fat cells are extracted from a site on the patient's body, usually the abdomen, and then injected into areas of the face where volume has diminished.

The use of lasers in treating signs of aging is also becoming increasingly prevalent. A procedure called intense pulsed light which stimulates the underlying layers of skin and boosts collagen production using multiple light wavelengths works to get rid of fine lines on the surface. While deeper wrinkles respond best to ablative laser resurfacing with a laser such as the YAG, which eliminates the upper layer of skin and encourages collagen synthesis, as a new epithelial layer regenerates.

The most invasive and costly of treatments to eliminate and minimize wrinkles is the face-lift procedure. This requires surgery and the use of a general anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions along the side of the face, pulls the skin back to its new position, and stitches it in place. It can take several months to heal, but the results are generally quite dramatic and they can last as long as ten years in some patients.

Healing times of these procedures vary according to how invasive they are. It is normal to expect some discomfort afterwards, as well as bruising and discoloration, but these will heal. As a rule, such procedures are not covered by insurance except in cases where the patient has been involved in an accident and disfigured. However, there are various private companies which do offer financing for cosmetic procedures.
