What You Did Not Know About Loc Maintenance

By Daphne Bowen

One of the very first things anyone with locs has to do is to wash them on a regular basis. Many people do not have a regular cleaning regimen. This will cause buildup of dirt stunting the locs growth. In addition, you may have some embarrassing moments if you have smelly hair. You should use a clarifying shampoo first then a moisturizing one. Co-washing may be helpful. Whatever option you go for, make sure it fits your hair for loc maintenance.

It is best to twist the locs before you dry these hairs after washing. This way, the effect does not wear off fast. Dry hair does not hold the locking for a considerable time. This means more expenses because it has to be done at higher frequencies.

The products used on the hair should have been designed specifically for the purpose. Some people opt to use butter, pomade, wax, honey and grease to cut on the loc upkeep costs. What they do not realize is that they will end up spending a lot on products to get the stuff off hair because they do not come out readily. Another demerit of these products is that they are not well absorbed. Water-based products are the best to use for the absorption rate is high and they do not stick on the particular hair.

Watch out for overdoing the twisting. It leads to breakage and hair thinning which cause damages. If the hairs coil at its root it means you have over-twisted. The remedy is to lessen the tension. Do not alternate between crocheting, palm rolling and interlocking while twisting. Choose one and go with it. Mixing the techniques will make the end product a mess. Palm rolling is better because it produces better and neat locs. Something else to shun is having different people do the twisting for you. If done by the same person, he or she will get better at caring for your hair over time.

When you are done with re-twisting the hairs, drying at the salon is better than air drying. If you have your own dryer at home then the better. The latter causes them to come off fast and also makes this hair smelly. At times, it may cause mold to grow on the locs. These are not very good experiences. Using a dryer means the drying process will be done in a couple of minutes.

This hair needs moisture. Therefore, cover it with a silken scarf when you go to sleep or use a silk pillowcase. This is a good way to avoid damages and keep the style for longer. Fuzzy hair will occur less likely if this hair is covered. When styling this hair, pulling it tightly is to be avoided. The edges break easily and growth of the locs will be retarded. Styling immediately after twisting maintains the certain hair in a good shape for longer.

Eating a balanced diet may seem too insignificant in the maintenance of healthy locs but it is an important aspect. In addition, avoid touching your head all the time. Playing with the locs may cause them to thin because you twist them many times.

Covering the particular hair protects it from dirt and lint. This is crucial especially to those who are just starting off. Some work environments are dusty and if the debris are allowed to accumulate and fail to come out.
