What To Anticipate During Recovery From Breast Reduction

By Lelia Hall

If you are going for a surgery, you need to follow patient care instructions provided by the surgeon. No matter what surgery you went for, following the instructions provided by the surgeon is the only way for you to recover quickly. This is especially true if you are going for breast reduction. For this surgery, here are the things you can anticipate.

First, there is the issue with your drains. Drains are usually attached to you once you finish the surgery. However, this will then be removed during your first follow-up appointment with either your surgeon or post-operative care doctor. The said appointment is usually scheduled some time during the first week after surgery.

Incision care. Just like with any other operations, you have to keep the incisions as well as the suture line dry. Depending on what method your surgeon prefers, you might have to use products to cover up the sutures or you may use tissue glues externally. The one who can give you the specifics for incision care is the surgeon.

Suture removal will happen right after. This is because the stitches should not be left forever in your body. In removing the stitches, the doctor in charge of your post-operative care will first check if everything is okay in the treatment area. When no problems arise, these stitches can be removed. The suture removal is usually scheduled around ten days after the treatment.

Monitoring temperature. It is highly recommended that while one is healing from the said operation, it is imperative to take temperature regularly. You have to watch out when your temperature rise from normal. An elevated temperature is a common sign of an infection. You have to contact your doctor immediately in such cases so that you can be given proper medication.

Soreness and pain. It is only natural that you feel tender, sore, and stiff right after the said operation. These soreness and pain can usually take a few days before they heal. If you feel tender, sore, and stiff, you will most likely not want to move. Do not worry about it though because these feelings will subside in no time.

Swelling is something that you cannot avoid when you are going through this invasive procedure too. The swelling of the treatment area will usually stay up to three to four months. With the swelling, others may not be able to notice it though. Most of the time, the one who will be able to notice your swelling would only be you.

Bruising. There is also the chances of getting bruises right after the operation. You might or might not experience bruising. This is because bruising is simply dependent on the patient, the effectiveness of the medicine administered, as well as the techniques used on the operation.

You need to sleep with care after the said invasive procedure. You have to sleep with fluffy pillows stuck under your head and upper back. It is also recommended to sleep in wedge pillows and recliner chairs. This is the best way to keep your body's torso elevated. This can then relieve pressure which will then reduce your pain and swelling.
