Self Tanning Lotion Application Tips

By Haywood Hunter

If you love a dark and deep tan, you may have to spend a lot of time in the sun. However, too much sun can be bad for the skin and for your health. It is better to invest in self tanning lotion that is designed to be used indoors. This way, you can avoid skin problems associated with UV light, and here are some helpful tips for using these products.

The first step involves choosing something that is proven to work. Make sure it has all natural ingredients and is safe to apply. Also, some of these products are specifically designed for light colored skin, while others are made to work well for people that have darker complexions.

Before application is the best time to shave your legs and other areas. Otherwise the cream may not be as effective. After you shave, use a good skin conditioner and wait several hours before using the sunless suntan cream.

Exfoliation is an important part of the preparation process. You can invest in exfoliation products but all you really need to do is take a shower and rub the skin well with a cloth or bath sponge. This will usually remove most of the dead skin cells from the epidermis. If you do not exfoliate, the cream may remove dead skin cells and this will affect the quality of your suntan.

You should not apply suntan cream as soon as you get out of the shower. Give your skin enough time to dry completely. This will make the products absorb better. Most people use some type of protection for the palms of the hands. Tanning is not usually advised for your palms because they may turn yellow or orange. To prevent this from happening you can wash the hands frequently or use some rubber gloves. Special tanning mitts are also available.

Start the application process in one body area. For instance, you might begin with the feet, then legs, hips, and so on. This insures that you apply the cream in an even manner. Remember to go lightly on knees and elbows. They may absorb the lotion easier and become much darker, so you may need less cream. Also, be certain that your product can be used on the face.

Like painting a car, it is usually best to apply the solution in thin layers. Make sure to give it plenty of time to work and let it sit overnight. Then you can tell if you should use additional applications or not. If you have never used these products before, consider applying lotion on a small test area of your skin, beforehand. This can keep you making a major mistake.

Once you are finished, avoid lying down or putting on clothing for about half an hour or so. That will keep your cream from rubbing off. Wait a day before you attempt to shower or enter the water. Also, remember to give the lotion plenty of time to work, and use top quality products like one from Sun Laboratories.
